Carly Jepsen is being sued for copyright infringement! E! News reports that Ukranian singer AZA is claiming the Canadian singer borrowed elements of her Christmas song Hunky Santa and used it as a basis for Call Me Maybe. The complaint was filed today in federal court in Los Angeles.
AZA says in a statement, “I’m shocked and surprised that these people wanted to sample my lyrics on Call Me Maybe. They didn’t ask me for permission—they just stole it. That’s why I filed this lawsuit. When I first listened to it on the radio while driving my car, I almost got into an accident. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.”
Also listed among the defendants are Jepsen’s cowriters, Tavish Crowe and Josh Ramsay, as well as Scooter Braun.
AZA is seeking unspecified damages and a court order barring the parties from continuing to possess, distribute, sell, reproduce, advertise or promote Call Me Maybe around the world.
