In the upcoming Lifetime movie Holiday Spin, Garrett Clayton – who plays a teen who is trying to reconnect with his father – shares the screen with seasoned actor Ralph Macchio. Garrett‘s come a long way since his very first role – in a summer camp production of Charlotte’s Web playing what he calls “the worst Uncle Homer ever.”
Garrett talked exclusively with Celebrity Teen Scoop about playing Blake in Holiday Spin, gave us a sneak peek at other projects he’s got coming up, and even revealed one of his hidden talents. Hint: Listen carefully and you might hear it.
Celebrity Teen Scoop: Tell us about your role as Blake in Holiday Spin.
Garrett: Well, my character is a headstrong and passionate guy who’s really into MMA fighting. He ends up going through a difficult time when his mom passes away and he’s forced to go live with his his father, who he’s never met. So, as you can imagine, it’s a pretty rough ride for Blake for awhile… until he rediscovers his old passion for dancing.
CTS: What was it like working with Ralph Macchio? Were you familiar with his Karate Kid movies?
Garrett: I actually watched the Karate Kid movies with my friends when I was younger, so it was really cool to get to work with Ralph. It was an eye-opening experience because he’s been in the industry for so long and I feel like I’ve grown a lot as an actor in getting to hear the stories of when he worked on movies like Karate Kid, The Outsiders, and My Cousin Vinny. It was cool to hear about the experiences firsthand. We also have a fair amount of emotional things to work out as the characters in this movie and that was a good learning experience as well.
CTS: You play a dancer in the movie. Had you had dancing experience before getting the part?
Garrett: I’ve had quite a bit of dance experience, yeah. I’ve been dancing since I was 15.
CTS: How long have you been acting, and how did you get started in the business?
Garrett: I went to a summer camp when I was younger and we got to choose one activity a week. I chose to participate in the play they were putting on and ended up being the worst Uncle Homer ever in the camp’s production of Charlotte’s Web. That’s how I got started.
CTS: What has been your favorite role so far?
Garrett: I was in my high school’s production of Peter Pan and that was my first real lead role. That was the moment I decided I wanted to be an actor. (Plus, I didn’t hate getting to fly around the stage for six months!)
CTS: Who would be your dream co-star?
Garrett: I am obsessed with Emma Stone. I literally think she is perfect in every role she takes on.
CTS: You voice a character in the animated Oogieloves movie. Tell us about that experience.
Garrett: I didn’t actually voice a character in the movie; I was a dancer in the background of the Marvin’s Milkshake scene. It was the first big project I worked on and opened up a few doors for me. It was really cool meeting Chazz Palminteri.
CTS: Any hidden talents you can share with our readers?
Garrett: I’m an avid video game player. And I can make my ear drum pop so that people can hear it.
CTS: What’s a typical day when you’re not working on set?
Garrett: Usually I’ll wake up and go to the gym and then try to grab lunch with some friends. I also spend a lot of time on my balcony. It has an awesome view of the mountains and sometimes I can see the fireworks at Six Flags if it’s a clear night.
CTS: What’s coming up next for Garrett Clayton?
Garrett: Up next, I’m one of the leads of the new Disney Channel musical Teen Beach Movie, coming out Summer 2013. It’s a really fun throwback to the 1960s and I’m sure people will love it. I play a cool surfer who’s kind of a mix between Frankie Avalon and Link from Hairspray. Make sure to check it out!
Holiday Spin premieres on Sunday, November 18 at 9pm ET/PT on Lifetime.
