Soap fans know Nic Robuck as mysterious heartthrob James Ford on One Life To Live. Now audiences will get to see another side of Nic – a much darker side – when he plays a troubled young man with a murderous streak in the upcoming Lifetime movie Dark Desire.
With roles on shows ranging from iCarly to Ringer to CSI: Miami, Nic is one busy – and versatile – actor. But in an exclusive interview with Celebrity Teen Scoop the 25-year-old reveals why playing the damaged, twisted Shane Dempsey in Dark Desire may be his favorite role yet.
Celebrity Teen Scoop: Tell us about your role in Dark Desire. What is the movie all about?
Nic: I play a young sociopath named Shane Dempsey, who had a very rough upbringing with the death of his mother at an early age and abuse from his father. So throughout the movie, Shane gets very attached to people who show him love and affection. When he feels like the love and affection he is getting is in jeopardy of being taken away, he goes to very desperate measures to hold onto that feeling and the people making him feel that way…even if it means killing!
CTS: How did you prepare for the role? How did you enjoy working with the rest of the cast?
Nic: I generally have a very easy time empathizing with the characters I play or audition for. I use my own past and experiences to help embody the character. I recently started listening to moody, emotional music to help draw up emotions to use in my performance as well.
I had such a blast working with the rest of the cast. Kelly Lynch, Michael Nouri and Mika Boorem were such a dream cast to work with. We had a good time making sure to crack jokes and keep things light on such a serious film. Brian Borello and I had an easy time becoming friends like our characters in the movie as well. I couldn’t be more pleased with the rest of the cast and the talent brought to the table.
CTS: What has been your favorite role so far?
Nic: At the time I booked James Ford on One Life to Live, it was the biggest role that I had landed . I loved being on TV so often and telling so many different stories about one character. It also taught me so much about acting, and had I not been on a soap before, I would have found the shooting schedule for Dark Desire daunting. But I have to say, Shane is my favorite character to date. Playing a nice, charming guy with dark, deep-rooted issues is a dream role for any actor. I was able to bring my own creativity to the role, to experience and play with it. Working with the director, Armand Mastroianni, was a dream because it was so collaborative, and I wasn’t afraid to try things and a lot of them ended up in the movie. Shane Dempsey = Dream Job!
CTS: Who would be your dream co-star?
Nic: It would be a dream come true to work with Matt Damon. He is a phenomenal actor who can play tough, but also isn’t afraid to show emotion. It would also be a dream come true to work with Kate Winslet and Keira Knightley; I am a big fan of both of their work. I would also love to work with an old friend from USC, Deborah Ann Woll, from True Blood. We went to the USC School of Theatre together and she was such a talent even back then, it would be great to work together again.
CTS: What’s a typical day when you’re not working on set?
Nic: I usually go to the gym first thing in the morning, I read a lot to keep my mind and imagination sharp, I am an IMDB.com junkie checking for entertainment news updates, I take my boxer, Lilly, for a walk most afternoons, and I try to see as many movies as possible. When I’m not on set working, it makes me happy to sit in a theatre watching other people work and doing what makes them happy.
CTS: What advice would you give to young, aspiring actors hoping to break into the business?
Nic: First and foremost, stay persistent and positive…there’s no room for negative thinking in this business. Secondly, prepare as best you can for everything, even when you don’t feel like it, that’s usually when you come up with something brilliant. Lastly, keep busy with other things, have hobbies to occupy yourself so you aren’t constantly thinking about the business.
CTS: Do you have any other upcoming projects we can look out for?
Nic: I like to keep other projects a secret until they are set in stone…call me superstitious.
CTS: Do you have any plans for the holiday season?
Nic: I am actually taking a trip to Peru over the New Year. I love to travel and haven’t been out of the country in a while, and Peru has always been a dream destination. So I will be star gazing from the top of Machu Pichu come 2013!
Dark Desire premieres Friday, November 23rd at 8pm ET/PT on Lifetime Movie Network (LMN)
