Fans of Tim Allen’s Last Man Standing will recognize Kaitlyn Dever as the tomboyish youngest daughter Eve Baxter on the hit ABC comedy series. But you may also know this talented 15-year-old from her stint on FX’s critically acclaimed Justified, or the HBO movie, An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong. Next you’ll be able to catch Kaitlyn on the big screen when she stars alongside Shailene Woodley in The Spectacular Now.
Celebrity Teen Scoop caught up with Kaitlyn and talked exclusively with the busy actress about her popular TV show, her upcoming movie and future plans. And for all you aspiring actors out there, Katilyn has some words of encouragement.
Celebrity Teen Scoop: Tell us a little bit about your character Eve Baxter in Last Man Standing.
Kaitlyn: Eve has changed a lot throughout seasons one and two. In the first season she was really tomboyish. In season two, she’s starting high school and has become a little “girlier”, become more interested in boys but the sarcastic and witty side of her remains the same. She always has something smart to say to her sisters, especially Mandy, who she always makes fun of.
CTS: How are you similar to Eve in your real life? Different?
Kaitlyn: I’m very similar to my character. The way Eve talks with her dry sense of humor is very much the way I am in real life. I guess the only difference between us is that she is very knowledgeable when it comes to sports…which I know absolutely nothing about!
CTS: What was it like working with TV veteran Tim Allen?
Kaitlyn: It’s great! I have never laughed so much in my life. It’s a new experience for me, “the sitcom world”, but I love it! Tim is non-stop hilarious. He is always getting me to laugh, and at times I cant help myself but laugh while we are doing a scene.
CTS: You’ve had a busy year, having also wrapped a season-long role on Justified. Tell our readers what that was like.
Kaitlyn: Justified was amazing! It was of my favorite projects to do. Justified was an amazing experience because I got to play a completely different person. I love doing roles that require a lot of work where I can completely change myself. On Justified, I had the opportunity to speak with a southern accent and it was awesome!
CTS: You have a feature coming up, The Spectacular Now and you’ll be appearing alongside Shailene Woodley. Give us a sneak peek at the film.
Kaitlyn: This film was a lot fun. Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley were really cool. My character ‘Krystal’ is Shailene Woodley’s best friend. Krystal is very bossy, thinks she knows more than everyone else, and is very controlling of her best friend. Krystal was a really awesome character to play and I really had a great time on this film. It also just got into the Sundance Film Festival…Woo Hoo!!!!
CTS: How old were you when you started acting, and how did you get your first big break?
Kaitlyn: I was about 8 or 9 years old when I started taking acting classes. It was during these classes that three different Hollywood agents came out to watch a talent showcase. One of the agents wanted to take me as one of their clients so that I could start doing auditions out in LA. My first audition was a Mattel Barbie commercial, and I booked it! After that I kept auditioning and kept doing more and more commercials. When I was 11 I booked my first movie called An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong, and I loved it! I had so much fun and I’m still great friends with the other actresses that I worked with.
CTS: What do you like to do in your free time, when you’re not in front of a camera?
Kaitlyn: When I’m not spending time with my sisters and my mom and dad, I’m doing something fun, hanging out with my friends. My sisters I always do the craziest stuff together, they are awesome! I’ve also been playing guitar since 2nd grade. My sister and I recently recorded a couple cover songs that I’ll be sharing soon.
CTS: You’ve acted alongside some big names – Diane Lane, Tim Robbins, Cameron Diaz. Who else would you like to share the screen with?
Kaitlyn: I am so blessed to have worked with the people I’ve worked with so far, but I would really like to work with Joaquin Phoenix someday. I think he’s such a brilliant actor, and he plays Johnny Cash in my favorite movie Walk The Line.
CTS: What words of encouragement could you give you young people pursuing a career in entertainment?
Kaitlyn: I have always believed there is no point in doing something that you don’t have a passion for! Do what you love to do!
CTS: What other exciting projects – movies or otherwise – do you have coming up?
Kaitlyn: The Spectacular Now is premiering at Sundance Film Festival and should be released very soon. I also just finished shooting an independent film called Short Term12 that I’m really proud of and should be released soon as well.
