Glee star Cory Monteith has checked himself into rehab, his rep revealed on Sunday (March 31). “Cory Monteith has voluntarily admitted himself into a treatment facility for substance addiction,” his rep said in a statement. “He graciously asks for your respect and privacy as he takes the necessary steps towards recovery.”
Almost immediately Lea Michele – Cory‘s co-star and real-life girlfriend of over a year – weighed in with words of support. “I love and support Cory and will stand by him through this,” she said. “I am grateful and proud he made this decision.” Later Lea tweeted, “Feeling so grateful today <3.”
This is not the first rehab stint for Cory. In an interview with Parade magazine in 2011, the actor talked about his family and friends staging an intervention when he was 19. “I burned a lot of bridges,” he said, admitting that he would do “anything and everything, as much as possible…I had a serious problem.”
“That’s when I first went to rehab,” he recalled. “I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing.”
Cory says things got worse when he was caught stealing “a significant amount of money from a family member…It was a cry for help.” After his family threatened to turn him over to police if he didn’t get sober, Cory got clean and started working with an acting coach.
