Big Time Rush’s Tanya Chisholm: “It’s A Rough Industry”

Nickelodeon's 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards - Arrivals

Actress Tanya Chisolm has sure had a busy spring season! Aside from spending many 12-hour days on set starring as Kelly Wainwright in Big Time Rush, Tanya has been keeping her 97K Twitter fans updated on her daily fashion choices. She also landed a guest-starring role on Rizzoli & Isles this summer!

Celebrity Teen Scoop recently chatted with Tanya Chisolm about what she loves the most about being on Big Time Rush. She also discusses what her popular “#tancandystyle” Twitter trend is all about and reveals her greatest fashion inspirations!

CTS: You currently star as Kelly Wainwright in Big Time Rush. What do you enjoy the most about being on the show?

Tanya: “I love that I get to wake up every morning, laugh for 12 hours, and call it a “job!” Seriously though, it’s a huge blessing to be working at all in this very competitive industry, and my favorite part is being able to do what I love with other actors/comedians that I admire and respect. Looking at four hot guys all day ain’t all that bad either!” [laughs]

CTS: What is it like to work with Kendall Schmidt, Logan Henderson, James Maslow, and Carlos Pena? Are you all pretty close?

Tanya: “It is so much fun! They are all incredibly funny, kind, talented, humble, and just all around GOOD people. We’ve worked together for about 7 years now, so everyone is pretty close. They were teenagers when we shot the pilot episode, so I’ve kind of gotten to see them grow up. We’ve all seen each other walk through the good times and the bad, and we’ve made each other laugh through it all.”

CTS: You will also guest star on Rizzoli & isles this summer. How did you land that opportunity?

Tanya: “Yes! I just auditioned for it like I do for everything. It was crazy, because I got called back like 3 times while I was shooting the ‘Big Time Scandal’ episode! Luckily, Rizzoli & Isles shoots on the same lot as we do, so in-between scenes production we had to haul butt and golf cart over to their casting office in costume. They were confused that I looked completely different every time I came back in. [laughs] I ended up booking it and we shot the episode at like 2 AM after a 12 hour day of shooting Big Time Rush. I call that ‘Living the Dream!’”

CTS: Tell us about the #tancandystyle Twitter trend you created. What is it all about?

Tanya: “‘TanCandy’ is the name of a bikini line I was starting right before I booked Big Time Rush. It is a play on my first name and the fact that you get tan in a bikini. I liked the idea of girls looking like tanned pieces of candy on the beach. The bikini line is still in the works, but I have continued to use the name as a way to brand my future fashion endeavors.  I love fashion, putting cute outfits together, and getting dolled up, but when you work on set it’s really easy to just wear sweats to work, as you have to change into costume for the day anyway.

On my days off, between working out and running errands, there was little to actually ‘get dressed’ for. Shopping is totally my guilty pleasure, so I had all these clothes I rarely wore. I resolved that in 2013 by deciding that I was going to start dressing intentionally everyday. Putting an effort into how you present yourself makes you feel good and confident in the way you look. I wanted to share my commitment to ‘dressing intentionally’ with my fans, hoping it would spur them to do the same. It worked! Every day, I tweet a picture of an outfit I put together for the day and my followers tweet me their outfits. I follow the person with my favorite outfit of the week. It is a great way for me to connect with my fans and it pushes me to not wear sweats everywhere!”

CTS: With over 97K Twitter followers that follow your daily tweets about your outfits, you are quite the fashionista! Who are your greatest fashion inspirations?

Tanya: “I’m really into the romantic, vintage boho-chic look. If I could live in Vintage Halston, I would! Nicole Richie, Lauren Conrad, Olivia Polermo, Rachel Zoe, and Vanessa Hudgens are some of my favorite fashionistas! They all have their own unique style, aren’t afraid to take risks, and always look like ladies.”

CTS: How did you get your start in acting? Could you tell us about your first audition?

Tanya: “Ever since my debut role as ‘The Angel of the Lord’ in my 1st grade Christmas pageant, I knew I wanted to perform for a living. My first professional audition came years later, after studying theater at UCLA. My first audition out of school was for the lead role in ABC Family’s hit show, Lincoln Heights. I made it all the way to network, which basically means it was between me and three other girls. I didn’t book the job, but I thought to myself, ‘Wow, this acting thing is going to be easier than I thought!’ Not so. It’s a rough industry, but it is all worth it when you get the opportunity to do what you love.”

CTS: Which actors and actresses would you like to work with the most?

Tanya: “Comedically, Will Ferrell is way up there for me. He is a total genius. Dramatically, Ryan Gosling…for obvious reasons.” [laughs]

CTS: What do you like to do when you are not working on set or preparing for a role?

Tanya: “I’m pretty domestic; I love making my house a ‘home.’ I love re-decorating, refurbishing thrift store furniture finds, cooking, baking, and entertaining friends at home. I also am addicted to yoga, hiking, and ballet.”

CTS: What other upcoming projects do you have?

Tanya: “Spring cleaning my house! Does that count? We just wrapped season 4 of Big Time Rush and summer is the slow season for acting projects, so I am working on launching my ‘TanCandy Style’ website and taking my bikinis from rough sketches to reality!”

CTS: What else do you plan to do this summer?

Tanya: “I plan to turn 30 and travel!”
