Demi Lovato is mourning the passing of her father, Patrick Lovato, at the age of 54 on Saturday (June 22). The X Factor judge opened up about her loss – and her sometimes rocky relationship with her dad – in an interview on Good Morning America on Thursday (June 27).
“I’m handling it OK,” Demi said. “My father and I didn’t have the most ideal relationship but at the end of the day he’s still my dad. I grew up with him and he’s a wonderful person, but I’m handling it OK. It’s difficult, but I’m handling it OK.”
The 20-year-old says she is trying to remain positive during this difficult time. “I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason,” she said. “My father dealt with mental illnesses and he wasn’t able to function in society and that happens to a lot of people.”
In 2009 Demi talked about trying to reach out to her dad – who she had been estranged from for a couple of years – with no success.
“The last time I talked to him was two years ago,” said Demi, who even wrote a song, ‘For the Love of a Daughter’ about her dad.
“You try to have faith in somebody, even when you’re the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you’ve been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don’t know what else to do. I had to cut off all connection. It was hurting me too much.”
