One Direction won Best Song of the Summer for their hit Best Song Ever at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night (August 25). When the boys hit the stage to accept their Moonman they encountered boos.

Later backstage Lady Gaga defended Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson and said, “If I did hear what I heard out there, I just want to tell you that you deserve every bit of success that you have and don’t you dare let those people boo you.”

She added, “I want to leave right now. I don’t even want to stay anymore because I don’t want to be in a room where people are booing.”

Harry particularly got some rough treatment. Taylor Swift supposedly mouthed the words “Shut the f*ck up” when One Direction went on stage. While most media are reporting she directed that at Harry – perhaps she meant that to the boo’ing crowd?

There was a lot of camera panning between the former couple. US Weekly reports while accepting the award for Best Female Video for I Knew You Were Trouble – Swift said, “I also want to thank the person that inspired this song, and he knows exactly who he is, because I got one of these!

The camera then cut to Styles, who looked down.
